The Temple of the Spider - Ode to Temperance: 2023

- Presented at RCA in 2023 and with MEADOW Gallery in 2023
  • This body of work symbolises an intersection of theoretical and material exploration. It is an embodiment of my research, focused on the re-imagining of Afro-Caribbean and multi-ethnic cultural heritage through the creation of sacred objects and spaces. The “Temple of the Spider” serves as a testament to the enduring power of oral tradition and the importance of safeguarding our collective stories for generations to come, while "Ode to Temperance" tells a journey into the depths of untold stories, a tribute to the resilient spirit of marginalized communities. It’s a celebration of the temperance that black women have exhibited throughout history, and a salute to their enduring strength.

  • The 'Freedom' series represent a desire to move past constraints. Inspired by a dream, the depiction includes a figure alongside her spirit animal, an alligator. It communicates the idea of giving in to inspiration and embracing the multifaceted nature of womanhood involves recognizing and accepting its inherent duality. Just as day contrasts with night, the strength and resilience often associated with womanhood beautifully coexist with vulnerability and tenderness. This duality is not a sign of inconsistency, but rather a testament to the complex and diverse nature of being. By acknowledging and celebrating both aspects, one can attain a deeper understanding of oneself and other women. This holistic acceptance paves the way for empowerment, allowing every woman to navigate her journey with authenticity and grace, honoring each facet of her being.ts. The copper, with its patina, tells a story of understanding oneself. Instead of avoiding or altering these inner complexities, ‘Freedom’ highlights the value of self-acceptance.

Jones navigates white spaces as a person of colour, blending imagery, poetry, and performance to create a profound journey of self-discovery. Inspired by West African and Caribbean folk stories, Jones embraces Anansi, the spider, as a unifying symbol that illuminates forgotten histories and transforms our understanding of shared experiences. Through performance art, she fearlessly confronts the challenges of hostile environments, transcending barriers to engage with silenced narratives and empowering herself. Her work sheds light on resilience, challenges preconceptions, and fosters empathy. Jones forges connections, transcends boundaries, and invites viewers to reexamine their perspectives, offering healing and transformation through storytelling.

  • These bronze pieces, titled 'From the Depths,' are a series in dialogue with the sculpture 'Mother of All'—a bronze bust of a woman who is both unknown and familiar. She stands as the Mother of these masks.
The masks represent the knowledge of our ancestors that we’ve pieced together and immortalized. They symbolize the profound journey of self-discovery through fragmentation, encapsulating the human quest to understand and reconcile the fragmented aspects of ourselves.
They mirror Jones' own life experiences, but they also offer a reflection for others—a place where each of us can find ourselves, despite the complexity and often endless journey of identity.
